The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers
The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers has three performing ensembles. To assist singers in learning their music, audio rehearsal tracks are prepared and made available to all singers for most of the repertoire for each programme.
Adult Mixed voices
The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers was founded in 1977, by enthusiastic, music-loving people from the Stittsville, Ontario area. GJS welcomes any adult who enjoys singing. There are no auditions, and sight-reading ability is not required. We strive to learn good quality choral repertoire, and to perform it to the best of our abilities, but always having fun along the way!
The GJS typically performs two major concerts per year as well as other community-service functions. Over the years, the choir has enjoyed showcasing a variety of themes and productions, from classical to musical theatre to folk and pop. Recent concerts have included an all-Canadian folk show, a programme of choral music about colours, a celtic show, and a jazz-inspired concert.
We enjoy singing together every week, and we enjoy the fellowship and friendship of the group. Singing enriches our lives, and helps us to escape the stresses of daily life! Music empowers us!
The adult choir also gathers several times a year for purely social evenings. We organize fun activities such as casino nights, Halloween parties, and special-themed dinner parties.
The GJS Adult choir rehearses from 7:30-9:30pm every Wednesday, at Stittsville United Church. This is a non-auditioned SATB community choir. Participation in performances is at the discretion of the Director, based on positive attitude, attendance record, and a willingness to learn. There will also be one or two additional rehearsals throughout the semester, leading up to special events, but these are always announced well in advance. Singers are expected to attend these important rehearsals, to be fully prepared for performances. The Adult choir will also hold one Saturday "retreat" in the fall, and another in the spring, dates to be announced at the beginning of each semester. Attendance at the retreat day is strongly encouraged, as this is a time of great group-building, learning, and fun!
The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers is a proud member of Choirs Ontario
The Junior Jubilees (Children-Treble voices)
The GJS started the JJs Youth Choir in September 2000, to encourage interest and involvement in choral singing with the younger singers in our community. Their fine voices and energy have made them a welcome extension of the established adult choir.
The JJ's choir is vibrant and thriving! Our young members are very dedicated, and work hard to learn interesting music and to perform it well. Their repertoire is exceptionally varied: recently they have sung jazz, pop, and Canadian and celtic folksongs. They frequently learn more advanced choral literature, and perform it alongside the adult singers and in special events. In December 2013, the JJ's were invited to perform A Charlie Brown Christmas with the Jerry Granelli Trio in a benefit concert for the Ottawa International Children's Festival. This is a wonderful growing experience for area children!
The Junior Jubilees children's choir rehearses every Wednesday evening from 5:45 to 6:45pm, at Stittsville United Church. Children ages 8 to 16 who love to sing are welcome. There are no auditions, but participation in performances is at the discretion of the Director, based on focus, attention span, positive attitude, attendance record, and a willingness to learn. There will also be one or two additional rehearsals throughout the semester, leading up to special events, but these are always announced well in advance. Singers are expected to attend these important rehearsals, to be fully prepared for performances. The JJ's will also hold one Sunday afternoon "retreat" in the fall, and another in the spring, dates to be announced at the beginning of each semester. Attendance at the retreat is strongly encouraged, as this is a time of great group-building, learning, and fun!
Junior Jubilee Teens - New this year!
Announcing the formation of the Goulbourn JJ Teen Singers (ages 13 and up)! JJ's 13 years old and older may also stay from 6:45 to 7:15pm, to participate in a new teen ensemble. Members of this group will sing with the younger children, as mentors, from 5:45 to 6:45. The teen ensemble will prepare several selections to perform on their own, with JJ's choir, and possibly with the Adult choir.
